Rope and Sling Rigging Equipment Used Offshore in Cyprus and Portugal

Rope and Sling Specialists Ltd (RSS) has supplied over 1,000 units of below-the-hook equipment for major offshore oil and gas projects in Cyprus and Portugal.

The Wales-based lifting and rigging gear company fulfilled the order from Maltese oil and gas logistics specialist Medserv, which met Eni’s scope of work for below-the-hook services from a shore base, supporting activity offshore.

Italy-headquartered Eni S.p.A., an integrated energy company, is a major player in the global oil and gas sector, employing more than 29,000 people in 66 countries. It engages in oil and natural gas exploration, field development and production in 42 countries.

This is the latest in a series of high profile orders RSS has received, demonstrating its capability to manufacture and source product for large-scale projects. The oil and gas sector in particular took note of the company’s purchase of a 1,000t Sahm Splice hydraulic press late last year, enabling it to manufacture 55t safe working load slings. And the investment is paying dividends.

Steve Hutin, managing director at RSS, said: “We have been working with Medserv for about three years and have gained their trust in being able to take large orders and turn them around to short lead times.”

He added: “In this case, we manufactured and sourced equipment to an order that was split into two batches over just a seven-week period. Medserv have facilitated the use of our wire rope slings, chain slings, shackles, web slings and safety harnesses for an array of projects, all of which required our team to be at its dynamic best.”

Godfrey Attard, country manager, Cyprus at Medserv (Cyprus) Ltd, said: “With over 40 years of experience in the oil and gas industry we pride ourselves on the quality of our services and operate to strict quality and health and safety standards. To uphold our reputation and continue to provide services to some of the largest, leading oil and gas businesses, we need a world-class supply network and RSS meets those requirements.”

He added: “We are fully conscious of the time constraints applicable to the oil and gas industry and ultimately of our clients’ requirements for maximum return on utilisation. We pride ourselves on our high efficiency levels and the quick turnaround of supply vessels. Again, this would not be possible without constant efficiency and quality manufacturing throughout our supply chains.”

While Attard concedes that the oil and gas market remains flat going into the second half of the year, he anticipates placing additional orders for slings and other rigging equipment with upcoming projects in the pipeline.
