Rope and Sling Opens New Facility in London

Rope and Sling Specialists Ltd (RSS) has positioned itself to service infrastructure, construction and crane hire markets in London, having collected the keys for a new facility in Hayes, near Heathrow Airport, west of the UK’s capital.

The new depot will be the below-the-hook equipment supplier’s fifth facility and its second in the south of England, where it also has a presence in Aylesford, Kent. Elsewhere, the rigging specialist serves a variety of customers from Bridgend, Wales headquarters, in addition to Templeborough, Rotherham and Grangemouth, Scotland.

Steve Hutin, managing director at RSS, said: “The facility is strategically positioned within close proximity of a number of major projects we are already working with, in addition to a host of large national crane rental firms. We have been serving the region to some extent from Aylesford but it wasn’t feasible in the long-term to keep travelling around the M25. I’ve said before how important location is, particularly when working with projects where their lifting operations are taking place 24 hours a day.”

It marks the continuation of Hutin’s long-term plan to have 10 facilities covering the whole of the UK. RSS has taken big strides towards that goal over a decade of Hutin’s ownership, opening its second facility in 2008 before subsequent ribbon-cutting ceremonies at new depots in 2011 and 2013. Plans are already afoot to open another in northwestern England next year.

The Hayes facility will be overseen by manager Tony Teeder, who joined RSS from a major equipment rental company that is part of the GAP Group. A decade in the lifting and materials sector also includes roles at Speedy and other equipment-focussed businesses.

Teeder said: “I was approached by the company’s southern regional manager [Tim Panter], who I have known for a number of years, and the role immediately appealed to me. The challenge of starting a new depot from a standing start and progressing it to a fully operational rigging equipment facility whet my appetite and I am excited about the short and long-term future.”

Teeder will be among four members of staff when the Hayes facility opens but this will expand over time. From the outset, RSS will invest in high stock levels, including larger rigging equipment specifically for the crane hire market.

He concluded: “I agree with Steve that the new facility has the potential to become our fastest growing depot. What sets RSS apart is the level of expertise and service we can provide. Once we are fully operational, we can set about becoming the company’s leading southern facility before realising our potential on a grander scale.”
