Turntable Crane Installed at Special Metals

Posted on June 1, 2016

As a company with a rich history of innovation in the field of superalloys, Special Metals are constantly looking for ways to improve their production capabilities and product offering.

They approached Pelloby to provide a system that would help them streamline operations at their Hereford foundry as they required a way to quickly rotate lengthy or cumbersome goods and materials when moving them between various workstations or storage positions.

The solution was to design a special turntable crane which utilised a 360 degree slewing crab unit that could freely traverse along two double girder overhead beams.

Take a look at this short video to see this innovative crane in action:

The finished turntable crane, with an impressive 23470mm span, was supported by existing gantry steel work within the foundry. The longitudinal motion of the beam, the crab movement, and the turntable’s rotation were all operated with ease via a radio controlled handset.

Duel eight tonne Eurobloc hoists sit at either side of the crab unit, supporting weights of an overall safe working load of 16 tonnes.

“Where previously we might have had to use a forklift truck to ensure these goods were facing the right direction before being ready to use one of the existing cranes in the foundry, being able to rotate materials as they are being moved has helped improve our workplace efficiency immeasurably.” – Marcus Upcott, Engineering Supervisor, Special Metals.
