House Committee Votes on Bills to Boost Offshore-Drilling

The House Natural Resources Committee cleared bills Wednesday to expand offshore oil and natural gas drilling. One bill would require the federal government to open more offshore areas in the Gulf of Mexico and off the coast of Virginia, while another measure would task the Department of the Interior to act on offshore-drilling permits within 60 days. “What we’re attempting to do is provide some certainty to those who would give us American-made energy,” said Rep. Doc Hastings, R-Wash., chairman of the committee and a sponsor of the measures.
