MCM Events, the conferences and events division of Maximum Capacity Media, has unveiled the tagline which will underscore this year’s Crane and Rigging Conference (CRC) Canada, which takes place Oct. 22-23 at the Edmonton Marriott at River Cree Resort, Edmonton, Alberta.
“Bringing the Industry Together” is a tagline which captures the very nature of staging such an event and, moreover, fits with Canada’s ongoing efforts to harmonize its crane industry. Therein also lies the fundamental value of the Canadian Hoisting & Rigging Safety Council (CHRSC) , an independent group which was publicly inaugurated at last year’s conference.
MCM associate publisher and editor Richard Howes said: “Those that make, supply and operate cranes in Canada will identify with our 2013 theme—Bringing the Industry Together.” With the CHRSC reporting back on its progress over the past year it was important to incorporate its work in the event’s overarching theme, added Howes, who has moderated both CRC Canada events to date and will again lead proceedings this fall.
CRC Canada, now in its third year, will again welcome crane professionals from all the western provinces, eastern Canada and many from the U.S., while a strong contingent from the oil sands in Fort McMurray in particular is anticipated. The two-day conference will address crane and rigging supervisors, facilities managers, and safety personnel. Mobile cranes, critical lifting, rigging, standards, competency and training will be among key topics.
There is a consensus among crane industry stakeholder groups that harmonization of regulations relevant to cranes, hoisting and rigging across Canada would be beneficial to industry, operators, and the public in terms of increased safety, reduced costs, and greater employer and worker mobility.
The CHRSC was formed to determine the best approach to accomplish a harmonization of regulations between jurisdictions. The council is a focal point for a dialogue on harmonization of hoisting and rigging standards across the region. CRC Canada is a perfect platform to promote these efforts.
The latest addition to this year’s conference program is Lee Middleton, who is a partner at Fulford Certification based in Vancouver, B.C. Middleton will followup last year’s paper on how achieving real-time competency is an effective method of limiting risk from failures of human performance.
MCM Events recently announced that Liebherr-Canada Ltd will sponsor this year’s event, while it was earlier confirmed that Industrial Training International (ITI) Canada ULC, an ITI company located in Edmonton, signed up as event partner.
Brett Woodland, vice president of sales for Associated Wire Rope and Rigging, Inc., will deliver a paper to CRC Canada on basic crane block concepts, including sheave diameter and its effect on wire rope life.
Peter Cooke, rigging training manager, Columbus McKinnon, will speak about lever and hand chain hoist safety and applications, while Fraser Cocks, executive director of the B.C.
