Britlift Delivers Bespoke Beam Solution for Cable Reel Lifting

A bespoke high-capacity lifting beam has proved so useful for offshore work that the client has ordered another one.

Teesside-based Tusk Lifting received a special request for a 400t lifting beam to ensure safe lifting of giant sub-sea cable reels. Tusk turned to beam specialists Britlift to design and manufacture the product.

“Our client needed a beam that could lift cable reels of up to 400t, with offset centres of gravity,” said Julie Montgomery, sales and systems support lead for Tusk Lifting. “We brought Britlift the challenge and they came up with the solution.”

Working closely with Tusk Lifting and its client, Britlift supplied custom box spreader beam with a cradle/stand and heavy-duty sling adjustor. Its technical team specified a more hardwearing paint job to better withstand offshore conditions. As part of Britlift’s comprehensive service, it also supplied proof of load testing and MPI, with an enhanced quality pack which included an ITP as well as welding maps with related procedures and qualifications, plus reports covering structural calculations and the paint spec.

“We have worked with Britlift many times before and have full confidence in their abilities,” added Julie. “The quality pack and documentation they provide is always spot on and their communications at every stage of the job are excellent. This is a very specialised area of lifting and they are experts in it.”

Based in Stockton-on-Tees, Tusk Lifting provides lifting equipment hire, sales, service and inspection from four locations in northern England and Scotland. It serves industries including construction and manufacturing as well as oil and gas.

“The client has used smaller beams from Britlift and loved them, so it made sense for us to ask them to quote for these larger projects,” said Julie. “The client was so impressed that we have recently awarded Britlift a contract for the next beam, which is 200t capacity.

“Tusk Lifting has earned a reputation for providing high-quality lifting equipment that is robust and durable enough to work in the toughest conditions such as offshore, in construction or even mining,” said Julie. “Britlift share our values on quality of both product and service, so they are a great company to work with on these projects.”

Based in Dorset, UK, Britlift works with a global client base, providing an end-to-end lifting equipment engineering design service including calculations, design, manufacture, certification, and rig design. The qualified mechanical and structural engineers at Britlift will work with the client during the design phase, ensuring the most efficient, effective, safe and suitable solution is engineered, be that a lifting beam or frame, a bespoke handling or lifting tool, complex rig design, or FEA. Its Traditional Modular spreader beam is also available in a variety of standard sizes.
