Against strong competition Bridon have recently received a contract award from Samsung Heavy Industries, located in South Korea, to supply the FPSO (Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading) Mooring cables for the Egina Oil Field; scheduled for delivery 24th August 2015.
The Egina field, located 150 km off the coast of Nigeria is being developed by Total Upstream Nigeria in partnership with CNOOC, Sapetro and Petrobras and is the 3rd Deep Offshore Development of Total’s in Nigeria. The field is currently under development with a production schedule planned for the end of 2017.
Located approx 20 km away from the Akpo field, the Egina field lies within the block Oil Mining Lease OML 130 and covers an area of around 500 sqm with a water depth of up to 1,750m.
The field was discovered in December 2003 when the Egina -1 well was drilled. Following the discovery, the appraisal well Egina-2 was drilled in October 2004.The appraisal programme and seismic data processing resulted in the Egina-3 well drilling in September 2006, which occurred at a water depth of approx 1,500m; following this, Egina-4 was drilled in November 2006 and Egina-5 was drilled in January 2007.
The 5 wells on the Egina field encountered 60 to 80m of oil in Miocene sands. The oil reserves are estimated at 550 million barrels.
Bridon was selected as the preferred supplier after a protracted negotiation period against strong competition.
Bridon will be supplying 17 lengths of 116mm Sheathed Spiral Strand with a finished diameter of 138mm. Each length is to be fitted with a forged closed socket delivering a total length of 2,220m. With a minimum breaking load of 13,900 kN and a design life of 25 years, each complete reel will weigh an impressive 185 tonnes.
This project demonstrates another achievement in Bridon’s manufacturing capabilities, being the longest mooring cable that Bridon have manufactured to date since BP Thunderhorse in 2002, and also represents the largest tonnage of spiral strand produced for a single project at
circa 2800t.
Andy Dodwell, Bridon’s Commercial Director commented “We are delighted that Samsung Heavy Industries, supported by TOTAL, have placed their confidence in Bridon for this critical project mooring, the Egina FPSO. It again demonstrates Bridon’s technology leadership position with a quality driven and proven product system.”
