180 FT CONTAINER CRANE TO BE CUT, BLASTED AND PULLED IN RARE TOPPLING EVENT AT A PORT IN SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO

A heavily corroded Ship to Shore (STS) crane is to be demolished by being toppled. Tommy Felch, General Manager at Global Rigging & Transport (GRT) said; “usually a crane is taken apart piece by piece, but the port decided that to save time they want it toppled, which will involve pre-cutting, strategic blasts and wire ropes…large forklift trucks will pull at the wire ropes until the crane eventually fails.”

GRT is a recognized worldwide leader in heavy lifting and engineered transport and has a long history with this CMI 6 crane as they have moved it three times. It stands at 180 ft tall with the boom down and what makes it so unique is that it fits in only three ports in the world. Born in 1981, over its 37 year history the crane is estimated to have lifted around four million containers.

Media are invited to film the crane demolition but approval and access will need to be granted in advance, please apply promptly to ensure we obtain clearance from all involved parties.
